About this event

Please join us on Thursday, November 12 for a special seminar by Prof. Matthias Mann, Director of the Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany.

Where : Auditorium, 415 Main St

When : Thursday, November 12, 2026, 2-3 PM ET

Prof. Mann is a foundational figure in modern mass spectrometry-based proteomics and one of the most highly cited scientists worldwide. He will speak about " Proteomics meets AI: from single cells to virtual cells."

Abstract:

Proteins carry out most functions in the cell, yet current models of cells are still largely built on transcripts. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics has changed rapidly in the last few years. New instruments and workflows quantify deep proteomes in minutes, from single cells, and with spatial context in tissue through Deep Visual Proteomics. I will show examples from cell biology and from the clinic, including plasma proteomics and pathology. AI now enters every step, from peptide identification to the interpretation of large data sets, and increasingly the running of the lab itself. I will discuss what this means for building virtual cells and why they need the protein layer.
