About this event
Traditional landscaping in America is typically an expanse of lawn and a few non-native shrubs and flowers. Unfortunately, such a landscape provides little or no food for pollinators. Pollinators are essential for sustaining a biodiverse habitat, not only because they allow plants to reproduce but also because their caterpillars and other larvae provide food for birds, the vast majority of whom require them for feeding their young, even if they are seed eaters as adults. Indeed, bird populations have dropped by 30% over the last 50 years. We can help stop this decline by altering our landscaping practices to include native pollinator plants which will increase biodiversity, support healthy habitats, and provide resilience to climate change.
Isabel Bailey a citizen of Concord since 1982, is a UMass Pollinator Steward, member of Concord’s Pollinator Health Advisory Committee, and a trail steward of Harrington Trail, West Concord. Since retirement from Boston Childrens Hospital she has focused on planting pollinator gardens in Lincoln and Concord and invasive plant removal in both towns. She has worked with the library and the Concord Garden Club providing winter native plant workshops for 5 years. She is passionate about fighting climate change and the insect apocalypse through improving our natural world.
