COMMUNITY NEWS

  • John Dumas, a Boston Marathon runner from Framingham who founded the Thanksgiving Day Huffing for Stuffing race to support the food bank, passed away last May 29 after battling health issues. His legacy lives through a fundraising page for his family (widow Mia and sons Jack and Jay) and cherished mementos.  MetroWest Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Senate passed a sweeping environmental bill banning plastic bags and adding fees for paper bags at stores as part of a $3.94 billion bond that also allocates funds for tree planting (priority areas), trail upgrades, and water safety measures; the measure now moves on to the House.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Asian needle ants have been confirmed near Waltham in Massachusetts, and experts note their painful stings can trigger severe allergies. Residents are advised to check outdoor items carefully + avoid moving potential ant habitats to help slow the spread of this invasive species.  MetroWest Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Framingham DPW will collect yard brush on regular trash day from April 27 through May 1—residents must bundle branches no larger than 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet long and place them in labeled yard waste containers.  City of Framingham
  • MassDOT says drivers with working transponders can continue using them now; new E-ZPass stickers (free for new accounts or replacements) will be provided so motorists avoid higher tolls if they lack a valid device.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Framingham residents are invited to complete an online—anonymous survey that will set priorities for women, children and families for the coming fiscal year. The Framingham Women, Children and Families Commission hopes to collect at least 500 responses to guide future city initiatives.  MetroWest Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former players from the 1976 Framingham South lacrosse team will meet Saturday at Ashland Ale House to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of their Eastern Mass. title win against Lincoln-Sudbury. Team captain Tom Stefanini said the reunion will honor a memorable season & strengthen lasting bonds among teammates.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Bob Hall, the Boston Marathon's first wheelchair champion who died April 12, left a legacy that expanded adaptive racing and set up a fund boosting access for Massachusetts residents with disabilities (his work changed the sport and many lives).  MetroWest Daily News
  • Residents can vote for the Daily News Fans Boys Wrestler of the Year from today until noon Friday, April 24 — 18 candidates from 10 local schools including four from Division 2 state champion Milford vie for the top honor.  MetroWest Daily News
