COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Framingham Farmers Market, the largest in the state by vendor count, will open Thursday, June 19 at the Framingham Centre Common and run every Thursday until Oct. 9, with vendors selling from 3—7 p.m. and food trucks from noon—7 p.m.; Manager Bill Sell said the market is expected to draw up to 2,300 visitors at peak times, and other MetroWest and Greater Milford markets have either already begun or will start soon.  MetroWest Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Closing arguments began on Friday in Karen Read’s second murder trial as jurors started weighing the charges—second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death—after over 30 days of testimony in a case where Read is accused of striking her boyfriend with her SUV during a night of heavy drinking.  MetroWest Daily News
  • The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles warns that scammers are sending texts asking for immediate payment and personal information—these texts mimic RMV messages to trick individuals into visiting fake websites and sharing sensitive data.  MetroWest Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The MetroWest Chamber of Commerce awarded scholarships to seven Keefe Tech High School graduates in Framingham on June 4 at MassBay Community College — each recipient received $1,000 to help pay for college this fall.  Framingham Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Massachusetts Legislature selected Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10 for a sales tax holiday that will suspend the 6.25% tax on most retail items under $2,500 later this summer, according to House Speaker Ronald J. Mariano. The Legislature will vote on these dates each year per a law passed in 2018—meant to offer shoppers economic relief—and local businesses expect the holiday—designed to boost consumer spending—to drive revenue gains.  MetroWest Daily News
  • The City Council approved an annual operating budget of nearly $383 million—local officials and candidates have begun preparing for the November municipal elections.   • MetroWest Medical Center took part in the Community Baby Shower event in Hudson this week to connect expecting parents with vital maternal and family health resources & support from Labor and Delivery, the Ambulatory Clinic and volunteer coordinators.
