CRIME NEWS

  • Framingham Police opened a new K9 agility training course yesterday to help police dogs face real challenges + officer Andrew Lewis and his partner Murph jumped obstacles while city workers built the course.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Police are investigating over 100 unopened packages found in a Wayland recycling bin after Lorie Gols noticed four on June 22 and dozens more on June 24—packages shipped via UniUni that were marked as delivered but never reached residents in Wayland, Framingham, Natick and Sudbury; authorities suspect a driver may have discarded them to earn money faster.  MetroWest Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rehearsals are in full swing as A Common Thread Theatre Company prepares the musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress for its July 18 opening at Dennison Memorial Hall in Framingham. Tickets cost $30 — $25 for students and seniors — with evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3:00 p.m.  Framingham Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a June 18 School Committee meeting, Superintendent Tremblay reported that a data breach affecting both staff and students was addressed and praised student achievements like the blood drive alongside plans for facility renovations and a budget boost. He also outlined new goals for the upcoming academic year plus improvements in attendance through in-house bus hiring, the use of AI in education, and expanded community resource partnerships.  The Frame

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Framingham residents must update their mailing addresses for tax payments to avoid delays; the new addresses are P.O. Box 847035 in Boston for real estate, personal property and water bills and P.O. Box 847040 in Boston for excise tax payments + real estate tax bills for the first quarter will be mailed soon and are due by Aug. 4.  MetroWest Daily News
  • The City of Framingham will launch OpenGov for online permitting on July 1 to let residents, contractors, and businesses apply for permits, pay fees, and track requests—covering Inspectional Services, City Clerk, Licensing, Public Works, Public Health, Framingham Fire, and the City Solicitor’s office for marijuana applications.  City of Framingham
  • Rep. Lewis joined House and Senate colleagues who last week approved a supplemental budget investing $1.39 billion in public transportation and education using surplus revenue from the Fair Share surtax. The plan directs funds to local projects in Framingham — including $150,000 for accessible sidewalks, crossings, and ramps and $100,000 for upgrades to the high school auditorium.  Framingham Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials said a new COVID variant nicknamed Nimbus—scientific name NB.1.8.1—appeared in Massachusetts after it spread to 22 countries and made up 37% of cases early June. They noted that the variant can cause a severe sore throat sometimes described as a razor blade throat and advised that vaccines remain effective while people can get tested at home or from a doctor.  MetroWest Daily News
