BUSINESS NEWS

  • GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced that 150 employees at its Cambridge facility will be laid off as the company moves manufacturing to Pennsylvania, with layoffs starting October 4 and ending by March 31. The facility will be repurposed for research and development using MAPS (Multiple Antigen Presenting System) technology for vaccines.  MetroWest Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Netflix released the final three episodes of Building the Band on July 23 and named Girl Group 3Quency as winners with a $500,000 prize. Massachusetts contestants had varied results—Katie Roeder with SZN4 reached the final two, Bradley Rittmann’s Iconyx finished third, and Northborough’s Zach Newbould from Midnight 'til Morning placed fourth.  MetroWest Daily News

FINANCE NEWS

  • IRS data analyzed by SmartAsset shows Massachusetts residents must earn $965,170 to join the top 1%—with 32,795 tax returns filed at that level. The study shows earning $378,434 places someone among the top 5% and that New England states have different income benchmarks for top earners.  MetroWest Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Framingham will honor Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families at the Memorial Building on Aug. 7 with breakfast at Nevins Hall at 8 a.m. and a ceremony at 9 a.m.—residents must submit Purple Heart application forms by July 31 to have loved ones recognized.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Massachusetts law requires drivers to stay in the right lane unless they are passing another vehicle or about to turn left + heavy trucks must also remain in the far-right lane unless in an emergency. Violators can face fines up to $100, and speeding in the left lane is not allowed.  MetroWest Daily News
  • In a recent report on The Frame, city council members heard updates on downtown building plans, Geoff Epstein launched his mayoral campaign & the United Way of Tri-County hosted its annual golf tournament.  The Frame
  • The Framingham Highway Department announced that Brook Street and Edgebrook Road will be paved on July 31 and August 1, weather permitting, with work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Detours are set and crews will then paint lines, spread loam and seed, and finish site cleanup — officials request the public's patience.  City of Framingham

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC says COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts are rising with emergency room visits for children ages 0-4 increasing and the new Nimbus strain—seen in 37% of cases nationwide—spreading quickly though not causing more severe illness. Massachusetts DPH reported 377 confirmed and 77 unconfirmed cases as of June 28, and updated vaccines continue to be the best protection.  MetroWest Daily News
  • The Massachusetts Department of Public Health closed 33 beaches this weekend due to unsafe water — swimmers risk illness until safe bacteria levels return; Framingham’s Waushakum Beach is among these affected sites.  MetroWest Daily News
