CULTURE NEWS

  • The Danforth Art Museum & School in Framingham received a record bequest of over $4.6M from Susan Litowitz’s estate. The gift will endow operations, education and community programs in the Litowitz Family Gallery and provide financial aid for adult art students.  MetroWest Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, many electric customers in Framingham and across Massachusetts will see higher rates as Eversource raises its rate from 13.4 to 14.8 cents per kWh and National Grid increases its rate from 14.7 to 15.4 cents per kWh. Consumers are advised to shop for competitive green energy offers to save on their bills.  MetroWest Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 31, the Massachusetts Senate passed a bill to ban cell phone use in public schools from bell to bell— the bill now advances to the House before Gov. Healey can sign it— ensuring a statewide rule for student devices.  MetroWest Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders are planning to add $75,000 to the accessible dock at Waushakum Pond and will ask residents for their input on expanding electric vehicle charging stations — they are also exploring the best, cost-effective route from Framingham to Logan International Airport.  The Frame
  • MassDOT announced a plan to renovate or rebuild all 18 service plazas across the state (costing $750 million) that will create 750 union jobs and update facilities with modern amenities and sustainable features. Construction will begin early next year with a three-year timeline and a public engagement process planned this fall to gather local input.  MetroWest Daily News
  • City leaders in Framingham are launching a pilot program to add on-street electric vehicle charging stations while asking residents for feedback on 11 potential sites including Memorial Building and Butterworth Park. The project, partnering with MassCEC + Commonwealth Electrical Technologies and Leidos with $500k available, will set up three to four locations by the end of the year.  The Frame
  • CSX Transportation will begin railroad track repairs on Salem End Road starting August 5+ crews will move to Maple Street once that work is complete, with closures expected until August 8. Police will be on-site 24/7+ motorists should use the designated detour routes during the upgrades to ensure safe travel.  Framingham Source

  • Five MetroWest and greater Milford high school football teams will change divisions in the upcoming 2025 season due to a new MIAA tournament alignment—Hopkinton’s Hillers move up to Division 2 while Lincoln-Sudbury, Marlborough, Medway, and Westborough adjust their divisions, affecting schedules, ratings, and postseason qualification.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla visited the Patriots training camp as the team prepares for its preseason game on Aug. 8. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, named in January, praised the visit—saying Mazzulla’s eagerness to learn helps improve team strategy.  MetroWest Daily News
