  • The Callahan Center in Framingham will name its multipurpose room for the late Mark Goldman to honor his long service to community programs and local projects—a dedication ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. at 535 Union Ave., with a reception starting at 9 a.m.  MetroWest Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Millis man, John Reardon, 60, was sentenced to 26 months in federal prison for threatening two synagogues and making 98 calls to the Israeli Consulate — his calls followed TV coverage of the conflict in Israel — and he must pay restitution as part of his plea agreement.  MetroWest Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Framingham District 2 voters will choose two candidates for a School Committee seat in a preliminary election on Sept. 16 — where incumbent David Gordon faces challengers Lorena Tovar and Luther Evans — and the top two will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot. Polling places include Walsh Middle School for Precincts 25 and 26 and George King Elementary for Precinct 27.  MetroWest Daily News
  • The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission ruled that the Framingham licensing board’s October decision to deny BJ's Wholesale Club the right to sell alcohol was arbitrary and capricious, and it urged the board to overturn the ruling. The board, however, resisted the recommendation during its Aug. 11 meeting at 26 Whittier St.—leaving the case unresolved.  MetroWest Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fifty-four beaches in Massachusetts, including Learned Pond Beach and Saxonville in Framingham, are closed this weekend due to high bacteria levels—swimmers risk illness until water quality meets safety standards. The Department of Public Health will reopen the beaches when tests show safe levels of bacteria.  MetroWest Daily News
