CULTURE NEWS

  • A USA TODAY NETWORK poll shows that 38% of locals say Christmas lights should go up during the first week of December while 9% believe they can start anytime before Christmas—Massachusetts law does not require lights to be taken down even though some HOAs have their own rules and experts recommend using weather-safe LED options.  MetroWest Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MassDOT has launched its fourth annual Name-A-Snowplow contest to let elementary and middle school students suggest names for 12 snowplows set for the upcoming winter season—applications are due by 5 p.m. on Dec. 5 and winners will be announced by Dec. 19, with each win earning a $100 gift card for school supplies and naming rights that remain on the plow for its service life.  MetroWest Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A nonprofit released its fall safety ratings for 54 Massachusetts hospitals, finding that Baystate Medical Center — Springfield, Heywood Hospital — Gardner, MetroWest Medical Center — Framingham, and Saint Vincent Hospital — Worcester received a D rating for issues like infection rates and error prevention. Seventeen hospitals earned an A grade and top performers included Massachusetts General and Brigham & Women’s, the study said.  MetroWest Daily News
  • Dr. Sandeep Jubbal from UMass Memorial Health said rising flu infections in the United Kingdom and Japan may signal a tougher season in the United States since the new H3N2 subclade K is not fully covered by the current vaccine. Massachusetts labs found only two H3N2 cases out of 151 flu positives so far+ health officials urge people to get the CDC-approved vaccine to help prevent severe illness.  MetroWest Daily News
