- ➤ In November 1621, Pilgrims in Plymouth feasted with local Indigenous people after a tense encounter — the Wampanoag initially came after hearing muskets that sounded like a warning — and Thanksgiving later became an official holiday with President Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation and Congress setting it on the fourth Thursday in November.
